Motorized, Electric, Power or Automatic Wheelchair: Is There a Difference?
No. Retailers and doctors use the terms interchangeably. All describe a wheelchair with a motor on each rear wheel, a battery pack under or behind the seat, and a joystick controller on the armrest. Push the joystick and the chair moves; release it and the brakes engage automatically.
The one product that is different is the mobility scooter, which is steered with handlebars (a tiller), needs good upper-body strength and trunk control, and is mainly for outdoor use. A motorized wheelchair suits people who cannot propel a manual chair, need to be seated for long periods, or move around indoors as well as outdoors.

Folding lightweight (11kg to 19kg)
Magnesium alloy, aluminium or steel frames with removable lithium batteries. They fold into a car boot and are accepted on flights. RM2,400 to RM5,100.

How to Choose a Motorized Wheelchair

Start with the user’s weight
All models carry 120kg. Users above 110kg should take a 150kg model so the motors are never at their limit.

Decide where it will be used
Indoors only: a standard model with 6 to 10km range is enough. Daily trips outside: choose lithium with 10 to 15km. Hills and rough roads: heavy-duty.

Ask who will lift it

Pick the battery
Lithium is lighter, lasts longer and can fly. Lead-acid is cheaper but heavy and not permitted on aircraft.

Measure the doors

Under 6 months: rent from RM350 a month. Over a year: buy. Unsure: rent first and have up to 3 months of rent deducted if you buy.
Batteries: Lithium vs Lead-Acid
- Lithium 10AH: 10 to 15km per charge, removable so it can be charged indoors, accepted on flights when under 300Wh.
- Lead-acid 12AH x 2: 6 to 10km per charge, heavier, not permitted on aircraft, but the cheapest option at RM1,999.
- Heavy-duty model: up to 20km per charge.
- A full charge usually takes 6 to 8 hours. Charge after each day of use and avoid running the battery flat.

Flying With a Motorized Wheelchair
- Removable lithium batteries under 300Wh are accepted in the cabin by most airlines, including MAS, AirAsia and Saudi Airlines.

- Lead-acid models are not suitable for air travel.
